Job Description

The Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES) department of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to fill one or more full- or part-time Web Specialist positions in the Departmental Services (DS) unit.

The successful candidate will provide Web design and support services in a departmental setting on campus as a contracted consultant of the DS program. DS Web Specialist consultants form a collaborative consulting team and are responsible for designing and supporting departmental Web sites as well as developing the workflows required to support a Web site life-cycle. The applicant will play a key role in integrating the departmental Web site with content providers and infrastructure teams. An ever-changing and challenging work environment ensures opportunities for consultants to grow professionally and acquire new areas of expertise.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain unit Web sites to meet accessibility and standard compliance requirements
  • Recognize and resolve usability and accessibility issues
  • Integrate new and existing University Web applications
  • Develop support workflows and processes as necessitated by unit
  • Maintain consistent communication with unit supervisors, content providers, IT providers, and developers

Mandatory Skills and Experience

  • Web site standards-based design and support
  • Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility compliance and W3C standards
  • Usability and prototype testing methods
  • Intermediate skill level with standards compliant HTML 4.0 or XHTML 1.0
  • Intermediate skill level with Cascading Style Sheets
  • Intermediate skill level with client-side scripting (JavaScript preferred)
  • Familiarity with Web content preparation (esp. graphics, text)
  • Ability to conceptualize and communicate complex Web projects and solutions
  • Ability to communicate technical requirements to IT providers and developers

Additional Desired Specialist Skills

  • Familiarity with graphics and AV design standards and programs
  • Familiarity with document editing and proofreading
  • Familiarity with content management and archiving systems
  • Familiarity with application development and implementation
  • Familiarity with database/Web application/CMS development
  • Familiarity with Web stats and usage analysis and optimization

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with at least two years of demonstrated experience coordinating Web site design and maintenance.
  • Proven record of excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Ability and desire to adapt to different work environments
  • Ability and desire to work in a collaborative team environment

Terms of Appointment

The position offers challenging opportunities to work in a collaborative and progressive team environment. Full and part-time positions are 12 month appointments. Individuals who will receive a bachelor’s degree within the next three months are encouraged to apply. Degree must be earned before start of appointment. Full-time positions include 24 vacation days and 11 paid holidays per year. Salary: $41,000 minimum, commensurate with experience. Part-time positions may be increased at a later date.
